The Foundational Years of NDI

Founded in 1981 by University of Waterloo graduates, NDI began by designing custom scientific instruments for industrial measurement applications. Recognizing the potential to expand their technology, NDI developed its first optical motion measurement system, WATSMART, in 1984, initially designed for the University’s Department of Kinesiology. This pioneering work laid the foundation for the Optotrak system, introduced in 1990, which quickly set the standard in 3D optical tracking systems.

The Introduction of Polaris and Beyond

By 1996, NDI launched the Polaris optical tracking system, enhancing the precision and affordability of localizing applications in medical settings, including surgeries involving the skull, spine, and other orthopedic areas. Further innovation led to the introduction of the Aurora and 3D Guidance electromagnetic tracking systems, expanding capabilities into applications where line-of-sight was obstructed.

Building a Global Presence

NDI’s growth continued with global expansions into Germany and China in the early 2000s and a significant acquisition by Roper Technologies in 2011, which broadened its electromagnetic measurement offerings with the acquisition of Ascension Technology Corporation.
